ORIGIN AND TEMPERAMENT

OF THE BEAGLE

It would be an immense temptation to focus on the beagle as dog of company: so happy is his character, so simple and so householders are his gestures. In effect, the beagle possesses the typical kind, faithful, intelligent and cheerful, indispensable temperament to take the happiness to a house. Also, it does not need excessive taken care, for what it happens almost unnoticed. It is clean, his hair is short, his sober feeding, vagabond is not ladrador, not quarrelsome, not, his health is usually excellent, his small one to carve results from great serviceability in trips and displacements. In fact, it is the smallest of all the English bloodhounds and his name defines it perfectly. Beagle descends from the Celtic root beag, or from ancient Englishman beagle, words all of them that they were meaning small. In reality, the current beagle does not exceed thirty three centimeters of height to the shoulder, is massive, and toy can be compared neither to a chihuahua nor to one, although there was an epoch in which the hunters were transporting copies of this race so limited that they were fitting in the pocket. But it is logical that slightly bigger and resistant dogs have been preferred to run behind the hare. During a lot of time they could meet beagles of different enough heights. There is a curious fact that the history of the race reports us: big groups of beagles were exported to the tropical regions (SriLanka and to Venezuela, more concretely) to harass leopards and jaguares. It is deduced that they did not have to be the smallest copies. Anyhow, we see here that in spite of his height and kind character, the beagle also can demonstrate valor and cold blood. On the other hand, nevertheless, it is undoubted that the familiar dog, the friend of the games and of the children, the authentic pet (as the Englishmen would say) meets reflected in estes small animal that does not hesitate to resort to the most diverse aptitudes for us making to laugh, as for example walking on two rear paws asking for a tidbit. It is not necessary to be an erudite handler to obtain similar tricks of such an extremely intelligent dog as the beagle which also, loves him being praised, applauded, and wanted.
The beagle is even known internationally since from his principios it has been exported everywhere, out of Europe.
It is not possible to stop aiming that it would be a serious error to forget the functionality of this small dog, since, first of all, it is a hunting dog for the rabbit, since it is demonstrated by his thick physicist of bloodhound become related to the foxhaund and the harrier, and a great number of French races progeny from these the same dogs., in fact, the foxhaund is the big brother of the beagle, fast and strong, used by hunters on horseback for the fox, as his name indicates (fox means fox in English), and also for the hare. The harrier is not so big and it usually not harasses to the fox, but it is perfect for the hare in the hunting on horseback, thanks to his enormous resistance and great speed.
The beagle is another history, it is done for the man who wants to enjoy the hunting and wants to see as these animals they work. It is very possible that in a beginning the foxhound, the beagle and the harrier, belonged to the same family that was expanding little by little, according to the needs of the hunters and the type of fighter that it was necessary to realize.
In English a phrase exists done to define a melodious, suggestive and agreeable sound to the ear: singing beagles. This definition comes precisely from the harmonious voice of several beagles working together after the hare and explaining to his way the step that continues to the pursuit and the trailing.
An experienced hunter will never be wrong on having "translated" the voice of his dogs, and will know adivinar if the followed track is fresh or old, if the piece is nearby or not, it conceals in his den or hidden after a bush. As sound in yes, the voice of the beagle is melodious with changeable tonalities, but stridently never. And the groan of a hurt or sad beagle is almost human.
So much for time the beagle is known in the British Isles who almost might be considered to be it an indigenous race. It is, certainly, one of the most ancient English hunting dogs, which, since we have already mentioned in the introduction, is completely related with other related races also very ancient, as the foxhound.
These dogs were always appreciated by his thin smell and his particular way of raking, and in the canine classifications one has put up them against the greyhounds, which help more of the sight that of the truffle to chase his detainee.
Tangible tests of the existence of the beagle like the only race do not appear until the XVth century, only we have the certainty of which there were one or several types of bloodhounds very similar to him before this date. During the reign of Enrique VII, in the XVIth century, already the evidences are more reliable of that the race existed as such although it is possible, once again, of that will talk each other itself about a similar brother. It is easy to understand the porqué of the doubts of the cinófilos with regard to the date of the origin of the beagle, if it is born in mind that from the antiquity there had doing to themselves definitions that well might be applied to the race.
In 1644 the word appears for the first time beagle to define a very specific guy of bloodhound, this word arises in the books of accounting (if this way there can be called the books of domestic notes of that epoch) belonging the dukes of Belford, who were always reckoning for an extraordinary provision of food for his beagles. True it is that previously the word beagle
it had appeared in the words of Jaime I of England, great hunter, but it was referring to these dogs of generic form, as whom it wants to describe a dog of small height.
From 1650 all the real British families will have his particular packs and, if it is possible to say thus, his own lines of blood. Between others, and for the supposed quality of them you re-pull, we must quote Guillermo III, the queen Isabel I and the queen Victoria. By that one then, to hunt was not considered to be a sport exclusively for gentlemen, and the queens were spending great part of the day watching the state of his dogs. Dogs of very different heights existed still, some of which were not going on from the half of what a normal current beagle, and others that were reaching the height to the cross of a foxhound.
During the Second World war, the population of beagles, then very nourished, decreased enormously and they eliminated numerous lines of blood. The hunters and breeders who worked to re-stimulate the race, looking for new blood and better copies, took charge homogenizing her and giving him a bloodhound logical aspect and functionally. They eliminated completely the very small dogs, considering that the hunting for the fox was entrusted to dogs of major height, as the foxhound, it was decided to give to the race an average but strong, massive, not very high format of paws, but square good.
The beagles are the British dogs that more have been exported abroad, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand and, logically, the whole central Europe. Also they came up to South America and the India. Only in England, for any more than one century, there is habio no canine exhibition of important beauty in which they have not been present a few or several copies of this race. And the field tests are rare in America or the United Kingdom that they are not provided with the presence often accompanied by the success, of a group of beagles.
" Is it necessary to take a rabbit or a hare in a hedge? .Llevado for his ardor, the beagle will get into the bramble patches happening for between the thorns and the much better than gorses the big dogs and at once it will come to the exact point. It will liberate easily all the obstacles that he finds in the area. Thrown in pursuit of the hare, it will cross the rivers without difficulty. The real beagles have a good gullet. His stamp is sharp and it is heard from much far; if the wind of face is had, it is possible to listen to them to kilometers of distance. As for delicacy of smell, they do not have anything that to envy other dogs, they see even in the ways and are very skillful in the trailing. We believe that this dog has a brilliant future, between other things because when we return to house, we think a few animal, very intelligent magicians, that they can be educated and are capable of lying down along with the chimney so well as any dog of lounge ".
This description of the beagle, perfectly current although it was published in 1888 for E. Derflat in the magazine Gazette des Sports, explains the reasons of the world success reached by the beagle in his double role of dog bloodhound and of familiar animal.
Intelligent, cheerful, slightly voluminous, economic, easy to adorn with his flat hair that bears the thorns and sel sweep, resistant, much searcher, tenacious, passionate, it is the auxiliary ideal one of the hunter on foot in the hunting for the rabbit and it contributes a valuable help to the hunter of shotgun of minor fighter, at the time that his character agreeable and awake, devoid of aggressiveness and of any track of shyness, they turn it into an accompanist who does to himself to want and who is much appreciated by the children
